Title: Quatrain Riddles
Post by: witt on November 30, 2005, 06:08 AM
I would like to revive a thread that we had here once. I always thought that it inspired some really great poems.
The object: You are given a word. You write a quatrain that contains the essence of that word without actually using it.
You may use any format or pattern. The only constant is that the poem must be done in only four lines. You may use any meter, rhyme scheme, or free verse. After you put in your poem, you choose the succeeding word for the next participant.

Example:

Understanding

Empathy rolls off the fingers
Easier than the tongue.
Kind words are good words,
But the touch forever lingers.

I remember that when I first started here on Splash that it took me awhile to realize that I wasn't supposed to use the "topic" word in the poem. I think I've got it all figured out now. It only takes a few years for me to catch on.

Title: Re: Quatrain Riddles
Post by: witt on March 26, 2008, 05:09 AM
Frag, it's in the dictionary, but it's two words--bon ton. Now you see why the store has that name.
Title: Re: Quatrain Riddles
Post by: Bill on March 26, 2008, 10:07 AM
Yes, it is my word.  However, fair is fair.  And Frag is right, technically two words, (bon ton, from the French, good tone 1a: fashionable manner or style. 1b: the fashionable or proper thing, 2.  high society) and the rules stipulate one.  Though usually, as witt noted, considered by most as one.  Nonetheless, I dug the hole, I'll get us out of it.

They'll note their manners always are impeccable.
They'll fete their clothing like a style libretto.
They'll vote their entree choices quite delectable.
They'll treat the local WalMart like a ghetto.

witt, you are a wonder!  Thanks for setting me straight.

The error in thinking I knew what I don't
(For French idioms all are like Greek to me)
Resulted in making a fool of myself
For which I now offer my apology.

But back to those poor little children at play
Whose mischievous antics hold hunger at bay
Though tattered and torn in attire they're known
To roam the mean streets like a kingdom they own.

Title: Re: Quatrain Riddles

Russ,

I own only one.  Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, eleventh edition, copyright 2003, first printing 2003, page 141, right after bonspiel and before bonus.  It was a flip and point selection.  I carelessly passed over the main (boldface entry) to spot the pronounciation entry and it was shown as two syllables divided by the hyphen.  Thus my assumption of one word.  Double checking, the main entry lists it as two words.  As witt noted, usually pronounced as one, heard as one, but technically two.  Verbosity denotes a guilty mind, brevity one without a concscience.  Anyway...

Your answer simply won't suffice.
The question mark will still remain,
Because no answer that you give
Could help assuage the heartfelt pain.

I was curious if anyone would GET the single word spelling of Cowpens (not cow pens)  I thought perhaps Witt would know what I was driving at, since she is a Civil War buff and lives in the area.

US History Encyclopedia: Battle of Cowpens
Cowpens, Battle of (17 January 1781), one of the most brilliant American victories in the Revolution. In December 1780, Gen. Nathanael Greene, commander of the American army in the South, sent Gen. Daniel Morgan with 600 men to threaten the British post at Ninety-Six, South Carolina. Lord Charles Cornwallis sent Col. Banastre Tarleton against Morgan while he himself marched northward, there by hoping to get between the two wings of the American army. Morgan, reinforced with several hundred more men, marched northward rapidly with Tarleton's army in pursuit. On 17 January, Morgan took position on the slope of a hill at Cowpens, South Carolina (formerly a cattle roundup center) and arranged his army in three lines. Morgan had 940 men, Tarleton 1,150. As the British approached, the first two lines of Morgan's army, as they had been instructed, fired and fell back. The British thought they had won an easy victory and advanced in disorder, only to be met by a deadly fire and bayonet attack from a third line of troops from Maryland, Virginia, and Georgia. At the same time the cavalry struck them on the right flank and the re-formed militia on the left. Finding themselves surrounded they surrendered. The British losses were 600 prisoners and over 200 killed and wounded; the American losses were 72 killed and wounded. On 4 March 1929, the one-acre battleground was designated a national battlefield site.

Secrets left to starve at last, distorted apparitions of you.
