Title: Let's Play With Some Words
Post by: daisyxo on June 26, 2013, 10:44 PM
The purpose of "Let's Play with some Words" is to exercise your mind - keep it busy, keep it thinking.  Word games are fun, creative, and stimulate thoughts - who knows what can spark your muse!

To play this game please read and follow these instructions:

* To get us started, I'll post a word, and I'll provide a few words that rhyme with the first word.
* I'll write a poem using the rhyming words, then I'll provide a new word for the next person to use.
* The next person will pick up the new word, write a few words that rhyme with their word, then they'll provide a new word for the next person
and so on, and so on ....
* Any or no form required - just use the words
* The poem doesn't have to be a work of art - it can be funny or sad, etc.
* The rhyming words don't have to be used in the same order you write them down
* Keep it clean please

We'll follow this pattern for a while, and when you least expect it, we'll change it up ... Everybody join in please and have some fun!  Let's play with some words!

started - charted - darted - hearted - departed

It's time to begin, so let's get started
write it all down, and get it charted
now's not the time to be hard hearted
words disappear, from your mind departed.

Next Word ....

coughing, sniffling, and the sneezes rolled
too stubborn, too soon, I'm still not sold

There are a few styles this little game could lead us to ....

* choosing the words (if you use 6 words that don't rhyme) and using them as the last word in each line is the beginning of a sestina.  There are many twists to a sestina, but it's a start.
* elise - the one you did with the word "faint" - has the feel for a limerick - add some syllable counts and restrict the number of lines and you're there.
* elise - the last one you did with the word "valiant" - it's almost a couplet.

I'm sure there are some more in there ... very close.  Point being that it's difficult sometimes to get started using styles - but you're already more than halfway there.  Just count and a few more syllables, or lines and you're there.  We'll go along with some more like this and then maybe we'll switch it up a bit.  Stay tuned to a new section (coming soon) with styles - guidelines and examples - and group poems.

But for now --- these are awesome, loving them all!

I love this thread!!!  Halo and elise - you are both really good at this!  Let's see if I can get my thinking cap on and join in

pink - blink - rink - sink - think - wink

Pink was always the choice for Stephanie, time vaporizing before my eyes, so I tried not to blink

Memories of her in pink
skating in circles at the rink
while I tried not to blink,
as she passed, I would wink

but my heart seemed to sink
though I tried not to think,
of my little girl in pink
gone if I blink.

P.S. I guess I blinked - she'll be 28 in a week!

dreams - extremes - screams - seems - means - cream - streams - beams - schemes - seams - reams - gleam

A quarter after midnight
extremes of screams

lost the means
to steal the
Wonder Cream formula
streams of moon beams

to fall apart at the seams
so much for reams of
gleaming dreams.

she was dressed up pretty in her dress and veil
I surely didn't want to hear her wail
tell the truth, she said, or I'll just set sail
well ... I did, then she hit me with this pail
that's when I pushed her over the rail
now here I am sitting in jail

believe me officer ...

I went back and reread all of the entries of this thread.  I LOVE them all -- so much fun, that I felt your excitement (and my own) with each new post.  This was truly a challenge.  In an effort to bring it back to "life" I want to change it up a bit.

New Guidelines:
2 stanzas, 6 lines each, with a 2 line verse at the end.

Verse 1 (6 lines):
The last word in each line will rhyme.

Verse 2 (6 lines):
The first word of each line will begin with the last word of each line from the first verse and will be used in reverse order (see my example below, the colors will stand out and be an easy guide.
The last word in each line will rhyme (but will not rhyme with the words in the first verse)

Verse 3 (2 lines, summary of 1st 2 verses, or completion of thought):
The last word of this line will be the same as the last word of line 1 in verse 1
The last word of this line will be the same as the last word of line 1 in verse 2

Here's my first attempt.  Next person, choose your own words to use.  Don't get complicated on your rhyming words - pick words easy to rhyme.  Have FUN!!

light - kite - plight - white - fight - write
rhyme - time - lime - mime - dime - climb

Stopped in to read, and saw the light
words on the page, soared high as a kite
felt the desire, felt everyone's plight
placed on the page in black and white
searched my mind, but had to fight
for my mind to work, my fingers to write

Write what you feel, speak it in rhyme
fight to regain what you lost over time
white overpowered with lemon and lime
plight of the visual, acted out by a mime
kite tails flowing, not costing a dime
light shining brightly, I started to climb

out of the shadows, straight to the light
muse awakened, speaking in rhyme.
