Title: The Last Stand
Post by: theMerlin on May 02, 2008, 11:08 PM
Where is my squire Allen?
Where is he now?
I look, but do not see.
Mine armour rusts.
Yet he come not.
Wilt lance fall from my hand?
Or sword shatter on cold stone?
Ere I see the lad.
He, who so oft dressed my wounds.
He, who kept mine weaponry ashine.
I look, and listen, fully expecting him.
Yet, he does not come.
Eyes fail, as night sets in.
The rust sings me to sleep.
Ghosts rise up to caress me.
To embrace my cold flesh.
And yet, he does not come.
No failing of his, I am the loner.
The single mote in a starless sky.
I weep for all the fallen before me.
Weep, and feel my metal carcass.
Feel it as the crimson banner enclose it.
Knowing by morn I shall not rise again.
But sleep.
Sleep at last.
A sweet, lonely sleep.
One of peace, I hope.
One, of finality.
To have worn this armour so long.
And lived.
A warrior, strong.
A man, no less, of undying temperament.
My squire, once more, would I see.
His hand upon my sword hilt.
Once more, ere this sleep take me.

~Ceann~

Forgive, my Lord,
your foolish servant,
overlong where the mead flows
and the maids are comely.

I am here
to scour away that
which has befallen,
my heart is sore from
the song being sung.

Give thy heavy burden awhile
amends to make I shall.
Walk not alone
on the road toward the light.

For the squire and his warrior, from a grassflower

A warrior and his squire speak;
behold, their silences grow.
Will they hear a one so meek,
one that they have never known?

The squire, he yearns to his warrior's side,
an iambic tale of friendship old,
eyes a-dimming, falling on the leathern hide
of the idle sheath gleaming gold.

I watch in the sunset, a warrior pass,
I watch in the gloom, a squire mourn.
And I, a flower sprung from the grass,
dare to approach at this moment forlorn.

To lend a shoulder, to kiss a cheek,
to draw down the blinds upon the eyes,
of the warrior that shall no more speak,
and the squire who knows his friend will die.

I will wait at the fork
after the ford
with carrots for the horses,
honey wine and journey cakes
and a blanket spread between
the alder and the ash.

Waiting
no standard sighted on the field

waiting
but minstrels tell old tales

waiting
with each sun rise

waiting--
at the fork
after the ford.

Merlin:

You've taken a page from Samuel Beckett . . . this is so much another Endgame.  The sense of aloneness of the species is palpable in your work, here.  Unlike Clov, your knight cannot move about;  he is more like Hamm.  And in his enclosure in the armor he is like Nagg and Nell in their trash cans.

Is this how it plays out?  So much like the end of Arthur?

Good questions which you prompt us to ask ourselves.

The horse returns alone
to muffled drums
and mournful minstrels
play a dirge.

Weeping,
there will be no wine
nor honeycake
beneath the alder and the ash

there is no more waiting
for he has gone to Avalon at last.

Merlin,

I have never been so profoundly moved by a poem in my entire life and
I hardly even knew you. Wherever you might be, you are in my thoughts.

Walk not alone
on the road toward the light.
Battle not alone;
share our might.

Thy trusty Knave
and a hundred Knights
thy path will pave
with a thousand lights.

Thy three queens, together,
will sail through the mist
and emerge through the ether
To thy eternal tryst.

~  This entire thread is wonderful,

from The Merlin's original poem, to all the replies underneath it...
I'm sorry to read of your loss here...the world lost another wonderful poet

Thanks Shadow Angel ~ I agree, this is a wonderful thread of tribute.  Liam was very much loved within our community.  I, for one, miss him greatly; I think of him often.
