Genuine Alley Poetry and Prose / A December 7th Poem
« Last post by Wordweaver on December 07, 2017, 01:42 AM »

Hush of Silence

In the hush the walls whispered
why was the paint locker on fire
the smoking lamp is never lit
they have missed every birthday

None have ever been promoted
they never drove a 57 Chevy BelAir
nor attended any class reunions
none own televisions or cell phones

They never call their mothers
or celebrate any holidays
they just sit and watch tossed leis
dance like ships on fast water

They are all married to the same lady

A fairly long read, but detailed and interesting.
Connect the dots to the modern day KKK and nazis that trump claims to have good people

There are no vacuum. Connect the dots through history and you’ll see a clear definitive legacy between slavery, bigotry and the atrocities of racism in America to this very day

Hills that we climbed

My memory only accepts sunshine now
but of course there were cloudy days
and ones with torrential rains. Those
with white canopies they use for funerals
where friends lay waiting for burial.

But now I see them riding their motorcycles
through open meadows looking over their
shoulders and slowing for me to catch up.
Those pleasant days where a million words
were spoken inside silent helmets that still
lingers and echoes down those trails we roamed.

The bond with nature and the freedom we
knew that tested our abilities and resolve
was a special blessing that only we shared,
like a one day honeymoon of total harmony.

The high I experienced in those venerating
days of joy seems to escalate with time and
radiate from the pictures of days I reluctantly
left behind.

We used to cook fresh pole beans every Thanksgiving ... can't get good ones down here anymore.  They are thin and the pods aren't full.  I used to start an argument (for fun) with my dad ... I would tell him that it didn't matter, all green beans taste the same ... he, of course, strongly disagreed.   I might as well have told him that a fish is a fish, they all taste the same.  I know they don't, but it was fun to rile him up!  I sure do miss him though.  Thanksgiving isn't the same without him.

So, tomorrow, and every day, be thankful and grateful for who is in our lives and for the blessings we have received.   Love you all ... happy Thanksgiving!!!

This year, 10 African-Americans were chosen to receive the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University in Cambridge England, the largest annual selection ever.

But let's not get it twisted.

Just who WAS Cecil Rhodes?

"In 1890, Rhodes became Prime Minister of the Cape Colony. He introduced the Glen Grey Actto push black people from their lands and make way for industrial development. Rhodes's view was that black people needed to be driven off their land to "stimulate them to labour" and to change their habits. "It must be brought home to them", Rhodes said, "that in future nine-tenths of them will have to spend their lives in manual labour, and the sooner that is brought home to them the better."
