Cy ~ SplashHall Poet
« on: August 03, 2006, 07:50 AM »
my name is cy bish port street.  i was conceived in an earthquake off bainbridge island in the company of sea lions, captain pete and bald eagles.  i was born a hundred years and a few days and blocks from the same town square where wild bill hickok killed davis k tutt, jr..  apparently gambling and guns do not mix.

i was raised in the scrub brushes of mesquite and flat plains of dallas, texas.  i can still smell my baseball mitt and the black earth of my childhood.  i miss my stolen mongoose which accompanied me on countless expeditions through the undeveloped farms scattered like freckles on a sun scorched face.

poetry found me in a public school classroom at an early age.  i was listening to a classmate read from euripides, "medea".  as her husband's betrayal became evident, i watched a fly land on the teacher's fly swatter.  in awe, i wrote the first lines of ignorance and irreverence.  the first utterences were as meaningless as television, but i still like to read them, especially to children.  i find little people judge less than their taller counterparts.

i owe as much to that fly as i do to so many dead writers.  i carry baudelaire's letters with me as a reminder of how blessed my life is.  his accounts of burning furniture to stay warm during the parisian winters, the pursuit of his debtors and the state banning of his words are for me inspirations and warnings of the magnitude of what is at stake.

i hold neruda's, memoirs, in the same regard as a jesuit might the bible.  there are so many writers i love from the past and a few from the present, i do not have the time or space to cover them all.  in simplest terms, it is for them i write.  i imagine them looking down, drinks in hands, saying, "street, tell us something we don't know."

finally, i approach poetry as emotional photography.  i try to convey what is impossible to see with the naked eye.  i try to bring to bear all the modern tools that are available in this age.  writing inside of splashhall is one of infinite examples of what is at our fingertips as writers.  i am working on visual verse projects, musical interpretations and explorations of new languages.

poetry is bread, let's feed the world.

I'm so thankful you chose the splashhall and not another poetry board, or some of us probably never would have known about you or your work.  I love, love, love your poetry.  It fills my head and heart with visions of places and things I've never seen or have seen but in a new light.  I hope you stay here awhile, you would be sorely missed.

Fascinating to glimpse a snapshot of the poet. Not only is your poetry consistently exciting, but  you are also a generous and talented critique dispenser. Thank you for your uncannily perceptive comments and for your inimitable writing.

This is a hot look, you look very much like a poet. It shows
your more serious and intense side.
I to remember roaming fields and farms as a child. I hope you'll consider
writing some poems about your childhood.

I'm glad you came to splashhall and introduced us to something new with more color.
You don't look down on anyone.  Some gifted poets can be rather snobbish but your not like that at all,
your very caring and accepting.
Like Bittersweet I to love your poetry, it's very livley and full of energy.
I enjoy  hearing about the interesting places and things I've never encountered,
but I enjoy thinking about them.

Thankyou for sharing your life with us. I feel I have a better understanding
about who you are. The more I learn the more I like.
Thankyou so much for your help and friendship. I hope you stay here at
splashhall, it would'nt be the same without you.

Hey street it's great to meet you. Nicely written Bio. Goodluck with your visual verse projects (as if you need it). I am sure they will be progressive and captivating like all your other work here. Cheers

ladies, and all who splash, it pleases me to be a part of a community whose sole purpose is the pursuit of expression and poetry.

i did not choose splashhall casually, i lurked here and elsewhere for months before i posted.  i came to splashhall purposefully and will remain until the lights go out in atlanta.

i share your heart felt wishes,
and return them all,

Mr. Street,

I persist in rereading that last comment of yours because it brings to mind so many, so very many tempting questions. I feel it would be impertinent to ask them flat out, but your decision is both intriguing and promising. When promises and secrets are kept, life has a sweeter taste.

I hope I've made a modicum of sense.

Thank you,
