I would like to revive a thread that we had here once. I always thought that it inspired some really great poems.
The object: You are given a word. You write a quatrain that contains the essence of that word without actually using it.
You may use any format or pattern. The only constant is that the poem must be done in only four lines. You may use any meter, rhyme scheme, or free verse. After you put in your poem, you choose the succeeding word for the next participant.
Example:
Understanding
Empathy rolls off the fingers
Easier than the tongue.
Kind words are good words,
But the touch forever lingers.
