Great idea.  My mum has been gone a long time, maybe I will write something for my daughter (she's a mum).  :)

i need to tell you
i miss you
sometimes like the first
months you were gone
i had nightmares
that you came back to life
and were angry with me
that was awful
right now i miss you
like your little girl
not the grown
woman - mother - grandmother
i want to talk to you
not about private things
you never understood
always saw things your way
but about the daily things
the new tree we planted
how blue the sky is today
that the sea is close by again
most of all i want to tell you
i love you.

halo,

a little more: at least from what i've read, your lyric voice is particularly strong. i hear it the most strongly in poems which are addressed to some nameless other, the "I" addressing the "you."

There are all kinds of mothers.  Bear with me if you have seen this one before...

Child Catch

little girls should clean their plates
taunts the mocking mother voice

Eat.
you'll make a plump Thanksgiving prize.

twisted icy smile
keeps the captive sitting straight

Eat.
or it's into the crawl space
to feel the tickle of spider feet

Eat.
if you know what's good for you
or rat teeth'll bite your wiggly toes

fear bubbles up in her throat

relentless clock ticking
creeps like
the cloaked nightmare man

Ill eat, Mother.
I'll eat.

I already know
it's dark under there

(sorry about the downer, but this is therapeutic for me---rejoice if you can write about a good mother)

matt, thank you very much! I find I can tell people things I otherwise wouldn't say, or even think to say writing
this way. It seems most natural. Much appreciated.

elise sis, means a lot that you think highly of this piece.
Mother's Day isn't all joy for everyone. Life is never that simple and it's good that you can express that which has caused you pain.  *hug*

I love this..

Eat.
or it's into the crawl space
to feel the tickle of spider feet

I would sneak my veggies into my pocket
then throw them in the crawl space under the house

Bittersweet,
the memories of moments
spent in her company.
Fleeting,
But she was
always there when the nightmares hit,
when I couldn't sleep.

She taught me well.
I still remove the buttons
from my shirts before I cut
them into rags.
I think she would be proud.

I connect with your piece, My Nemesis. I think only a mom can relieve the terror of a nightmare. :)
