Information Concerning Liam Henley ~ theMerlin
« on: February 14, 2009, 09:29 PM »
This letter is to a number of people my father called his "online family".
I am Roger Henley, son of Liam.
It is my most regrettable responsibility to inform those of you who knew him that Liam David Henley passed to a better life on January 24 of this year.
As executor of his final wishes I to inform you all that his was a life that made everyone near him better.
There were many people who called him "friend" at the service.
According to his plan, there were many remembrances of him recounted by those present.  There will never be another like him.  He was for sure someone who spanned ages and represented what was and is good and noble in mankind.
But I suspect you know that.  From reading his works that he chose to share with you, the last year was one filled with pain that no one ever saw, but it did express itself in his writing.
For me, I will ever remember sitting with him in the den, his cigar smoking and the aroma a constant in that room.  I have decided to move into the home of my family and in some small way try to keep his presence fresh and alive for as long as it chooses to remain with us.  I have tried the cigar, but it seems to favor only my father.
A long time ago he told me.."If you have any regret at the end of your days, your life was not fulfilled".  I know my dad left us fulfilled beyond measure.
Thank you for being his friends.
Roger

Dear Roger,

What does one say?   I'm relieved that my dear friend no longer suffers.  I will miss his writings and the banter. He humored me at chess.

Thank you for following his wishes to break the news to "the family."    We held a special fondness for him.

My sympathies.  I truly share your loss.

Thank you for sharing this with us, Roger. Your simple memory of him in the den with a cigar creates a mountain of images that you would not believe. When blended with his aura here, it cannot fail to bring memories of our own fathers, grandfathers, favorite uncles, and others who were instrumental in our own backgrounds. Your father embodied the spirit of all those, and did so to people who were complete strangers. I do not smoke either, but I wished I could have shared a pot of coffee with him.

Roger,

Thank you for letting us know.  Your Father was loved here, as you've discovered.  His mist will remain a part of Splash, as long as Splash is around.  Anyone who has read Merlin, knows of the mist, and the mystery.  I know I was blessed to have known him.  My sympathies to you and your family.

Dear Roger...

He will be sorely missed here at SPLASH.  What an awesome friend he was to everyone here.   One could almost see the twinkle in his eye.   My heart goes out to you Roger...I will keep you in my thoughts...and prayers.
Thank you for letting us know.

I am saddened to hear this, but as he said, .."If you have any regret at the end of your days, your life was not fulfilled." His wit reminded me of my own dad, and I had so much fun with him. He was always a blessing to me, and I enjoyed him so much. I shall never forget him. He and my dad can enjoy their cigars together now.

Roger,

As you well know, your father had a brilliant mind and a very textured and complex sense of humour. I had the privilege of interviewing him as The SplashHall Personality that he was. During the ten-or-so-day frame that we corresponded frequently, he delighted me with his sharp ( at times scathing) wit and worldliness. He was assuredly a renaissance man, a dreamer and a true thinker with vision and secrets.  He was somewhat like John Singer in The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter. He represented something different and poignantly meaningful to each one of us.

my condolences

I had to come back and say a few more words about this Dear Wise One
I admired his words, his talent and his sweet warm heart
I will truly miss his wisdom and kind words
We used to talk back in the olden days of Hal
When Splash Hall was a waking creek and just starting to flow
He was one of the first poets I met on line
and I couldn't wait for the words he would share with us
He is home now in the mist that he so wish to explore
He was a great teacher and he touched so many souls
He will be missed

I feel quite numb, not knowing what to say.  I don't know how I missed this post, but i am glad it has come to light this evening, to give me an opportunity to express my sincere condolences to Liam's family.

I lost contact with Liam over the years, but fond memories remain of his friendly nature, his love of poetry, his need to write, his storytelling, our chats in ICQ...unforgettable! Such a character...one can never really think he has gone...his memory will be with me for ever, I'm sure of that.

Good-bye Olde One

now that you are gone

now that you are gone
thunder-clouds gather
rain bounces off stones
pebble-dashing
the middle of January

winter tears
breach lids of skys
and form riverlets
filling ditches
along the edge of Camelot
where once we had sat
beside white yarrow
talking in the late summer sun
in a field fused with buttercups
and tall grasses
which now lent shelter
to ants that scurry
beneath pieces of rotted bark

how I wish it would snow
and blanket slow this pain
of missing you
