King David
« on: October 28, 2008, 06:44 AM »

Emblazoned across the heavens
Stars in their multitude call to me
Reminding me of Your ways
The path of righteousness
The marker by which I live
Do not let me falter Lord
I pray!

Watching from my roof top
Senses reeling
Dark void growing
Filling my chest with dread
Conscience torn in agony
Right or wrong
Which way to turn?

Such beauty before me
Silken in its allure
Danger dancing on
Her glorious flesh
Bathsheba, bathing
I have already
Chosen!

Dizzying lust molten
Honey in my blood
Laboring my breath
Ruling my thoughts
You cannot refuse me
Obedience your duty
My subject; My will!

Drowning in anticipation
Lost in desire--sin
So easily explained
Excused, cast aside
Ti's my right
Ah! Yes, my right
As King!

What man would do this
Send another to die in battle
Freeing that man's wife
Uriah's blood on my
Black soul
Too late guilty
Am I lost?

Destruction hammers
On the door
I cannot, will not
Turn from this course
My Guilt written
God's decree; the Law
Punishment--redemption!

Kay, thank you! I really have been looking for a place to post this poem. When I found SplashHall, I was hopeful this was the place. There is a partner poem that I will post in a few days, maybe next week. :)

and to say that you could feel my passion, I couldn't ask for more.

Dear Halo,

I have a book.

The Book Of Praise -- dialogues, Van Doren
and Samuel.

All about the Psalms. I recommend it.

... one of my more read and reread texts.

I love this poem!  It brings up images of the legendary king as the man he truly must have been under all that grandeur and status.  We're all human aren't we?
But where much is given, much is expected.
I especially loved the line where he says, "yes, my right as king" as if he owned her.  Really getting into his head there.  Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.  ~great job with motivation and reflection.  ~  E

When will we ever learn that by what we do wrong will cause evil to rise up against us in our own house as with David?
I listen for each lonely breath.

Hi Witt,

I think that is true, from Government's and what they bring down upon a country, to the family unit.

A magnificent poem! I can feel the powerful emotions in every word.

Thank you Mystical, I was very caught up in writing it and wondering who this man/king was, kinda haunted me until I wrote it.

When I wrote this poem it was the culmination of a long period of curiosity about Kind David and what the Bible says of him,
"A man after God's own heart". That has stuck with me for years. I have heard people pray, "give me a heart
like David's heart." I  realize that we all have hearts like David's, we're all human, make mistakes; some huge
some small. We sure as heck don't have to pray to have a heart like David's, it comes with being human. Perhaps
the part we need to pray for is to be more open to love, humility and faith.

Leonard Cohen's song Hallelujah also played a huge part in the inspiration for this piece...today I found a rendition
of this song on youtube, sung by KD Lang...it's amazing! The passion she puts into singing this is amazing! The
audience gave her a standing ovation!

You have brought King David to life in your words. Yes, he sinned badly, but the great thing with David is that he picked himself up, brushed himself down and got on with serving his God again. Good lesson for us when we stumble and fall. And he was truly repentant. Under the law he should have been put to death but God saw that he was sincere at heart. However, he still had to wear the consequences as we all do.
A smile warms a cold day.

Hi Kuranui,  exactly so. The price he paid was enormous, the loss of his and Bathsheba's son,
that his own household would rise up against him and he would not be able to put his sword away.

Thank so much for stopping in to read and comment.
