Memories/Wishes ... Daughters Don't You Realize ...
« on: June 05, 2008, 09:31 PM »
(In loving memory of my Dad -- Sherrill Franklin - Oct. 24, 1932 - Dec. 25, 2007)

Daughters, Don't You Realize ...

How I long to be called, Sissy -
to see the sternness in his eyes.
How I long to be his little girl -
to hear his lectures, one more time.

When Daddy turned to Dad,
he gave in to my grownup ways -
behind his time until late in life;
how I long for more of those days.

Daughters don't you realize
how hard that it can be,
for a father to let his Angel
grow up, can't you see?

Daughters don't you realize
the sacrifice he made,
to buy you those saddle shoes
before his time would fade away?

Keeping vigil by his bedside
drifting back to my younger days
to a time when he called me Sissy,
determined, set in his ways.

It's too late to tell him, "I'm Sorry,"
for all the heartache and pain,
it was just me being foolish,
you were right, Dad, once again!

Daughters don't you realize
no matter how old you are -
you'll always be Daddy's Angel,
his bright and shining star?

Daughters don't you realize
the need for his loving heart?
Fathers pass it to their daughters
to carry on when they depart.

I wish that I could turn back time
that I had just one more chance
to tell him that I love him,
as father and daughter dance.

Tomorrow he won't be here,
except in my memories.
Through tears I call out, "Daddy,"
and hope he can hear my plea.

As a child and even into young adulthood, my Dad always called me Sissy.  It was a thing from his side of the family -- all the women were Sis, or Sissy, and all the guys were Bud, or Buddy -- Big Buddy, Little Buddy.  I was named after my Dad's favorite niece -- she was Marsha Kaye, and I am Marsha Ann.  So no matter whether he called us Sis, Sissy, or Marsha -- we were both always answering.  It used to drive me nuts ....... now, if only we could have a few more of those days.  Dad passed away a little over a year ago, and my cousin, Marsha Kaye passed away about 6 months ago.  The reality of it all ... I miss them both very much.

Thanks for taking the time to read, and to leave your thoughts, Russ.  You're a lucky man to have 3 daughters, and remember that a daughter's love for her father runs very deep and never ends.
