Sleepless Nights
« on: August 27, 2018, 08:54 PM »
A Sestina - a work in progress … punctuation to be added later.

Sleepless Nights

Restless slumber from all the day's worry -
heavy are my thoughts that keep me tempted
to allow those nightmares to conjure fear
those dreams declaring my brain as victim,
pulses throbbing until it makes me scream
gripping my knees close, hugging my pillow.

I can't relax this grip on my pillow
closing my eyes surrendered to worry
burying my face, enduring the scream
don't think twice that I haven't been tempted
to cry out loud, to become the victim
succumbing to sleepless nights tense with fear

these dreams are so real; my heart beats in fear
of last night’s fight I had with my pillow
it's stressful to always be the victim
a slave to mind games that lead to worry
I have decided that I am tempted
to let it all out, to hear my own scream

yet, silenced is my voice trying to scream
which generates a host of heightened fear
flooded with feelings leaving me tempted
to once again curl up with my pillow
to sleep, and push away all the worry
to pretend I've never been a victim

Mindsets allowed me to be the victim
and I was crying when I couldn't scream
and those around me began to worry
passing on to loved ones this bundle of fear
as they tried to pry me from this pillow
I shared the visions that kept me tempted

the more I shared, the more they were tempted
visions crept in, until they became the victim
twisting and gripping each night their pillow
I heard stories of how they tried to scream
wrestling the images, nightmares of fear
I let it all out, now free from worry

I shouldn't worry, shouldn't be tempted
because fear turns you into the victim
and screams may be muted by your pillow

I hope you're not dreaming like that, daisy? That left me feeling for those who do suffer nightmares and night terrors where there seems no end to them.

Hugs, B

Hey B ... no, my dreams are much kinder, mysterious at times, but for the most part, I sleep well.  This was me forcing myself to revive the sestina.  The hardest part is always picking the words to use.  Has to be words that you can get a lot of rhyming choices from.  I did think of my daughter while writing it though.  Sometimes she has horrible nightmares.  I imagined how she must feel.

Made me think of my daughter too, she sometimes has night terrors. I cannot imagine writing to a set pattern like that, good job, daisy!

Thanks ... I've written a couple other sestinas, but i's been a long time.   My biggest problem is I want to stay true to the form, but for the life of me I can't figure out iambic pentameter.  Each line is supposed to be 10 syllables, but in iambic pentameter.  I don't hear the stresses in some words.   I also tend to think that depending on where you live, or where your accent is from, you might stress words or syllables different.  One of these days maybe I'll get it.

I sounds difficult, lucky you're brave and persistent and I reckon that will get you there. xx
